The Contromafiecorruzione initiative, organised by Libera and held from the 18th to the 20th of October 2024 at the Police School of Vibo Valentia in Calabria, aligns closely with UNODC’s mission to combat transnational organised crime. With over a thousand participants, the event spotlighted the crucial role of collective action against the world’s most pervasive criminal network, the ’Ndrangheta. Since its inception in 2006, Contromafiecorruzione has broadened its focus, uniting voices from institutions and civil society to address both organised crime and corruption.
This year’s programme addressed five key themes: redefining Calabria’s identity beyond criminal associations, empowering women in anti-mafia initiatives, exploring the socioeconomic impact of criminal economies, showcasing 149 projects for the public and social reuse of confiscated assets, engaging the Church in anti-’Ndrangheta efforts, and reframing migration as a developmental opportunity.
The event concluded with the Manifesto Against Mafias and Corruption, calling on policymakers to prioritise education, civic engagement, and social equity to dismantle criminal networks. This manifesto envisions Calabria as a region defined by justice and resilience, countering the oppressive narrative of the ’Ndrangheta. With support from civic movements, schools, parishes, and public institutions, Calabria is fostering a culture of civic responsibility. The manifesto outlines ten commitments, including promoting community solidarity, reclaiming mafia-confiscated assets, supporting victims, fostering interdisciplinary research, and strengthening local entrepreneurship. It also advocates for policies addressing systemic issues, from educational investment to territorial care and fair recognition of vulnerable communities. This collective initiative aims to dismantle organised crime and foster a society grounded in justice and equality, resonating throughout Italy and beyond.
