The Knowmad Institut has actively contributed to the global fight against transnational organized crime, mainly through initiatives in cybercrime prevention and drug policy reform. Over the past three years, our team has actively participated in the UN Ad Hoc Committee, which was tasked with drafting an international convention on cybercrime. We have provided detailed recommendations to safeguard human rights in the fight against cybercrime. Our submissions underscore the importance of a balanced approach that promotes security without compromising personal freedoms, contributing to a comprehensive international framework that aims to curb cyber-enabled organized crime effectively.
We have also worked constantly during the past eight years towards drug trafficking organizations through open science and ethical advocacy. Also, in response to the escalating threat of synthetic drugs, we organized high-impact events that convened policymakers, law enforcers, health experts, and civil society leaders. In October 2024, alongside the Colombo Plan, C4 Recovery Foundation, and RC2 in Berlin, we hosted a critical dialog on the global synthetic drug crisis—a significant force driving organized crime. This kind of event fostered essential collaboration to counter synthetic opioids through united, proactive strategies.
Aligned with the Rome Consensus 2.0, the Knowmad Institut is leading a comprehensive global review of national drug policies. This review, conducted with open tools like the SHERLOC (Sharing Electronic Resources and Laws on Crime) Legislative Library, is a testament to our commitment to evidence-based reforms grounded in humanitarian values. By advocating for policies that prioritize health, security, and human dignity to optimize the use of public resources, ease the judicial burden, and enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement in combating organized crime, particularly drug trafficking organizations, thus fostering safer and more resilient societies worldwide.
