Impact Story from Chiapas Foundation for Migrants Woman:

The project consisted of training for sustainable economic activity in Tapachula for 50 refugee women and victims of violence. Among the activities which yielded the greater impact were training courses in jewellery, Basic financial education, psychosocial support, development of leadership skills and personal empowerment, training in human rights and gender equity.

Refugee women changed their practices by acquiring new economic and personal empowerment skills, such as:  being able to generate income through entrepreneurship, financial management practices to administer household income and expenses, a culture of empowerment, which allowed them to make more autonomous and proactive decisions in their personal and economic lives.

Families also experienced changes as they began to value and support women’s economic work, breaking traditional patterns of dependency or gender roles that limited women’s economic participation.  Attitudes towards domestic violence changed as well, as empowered women were able to set clearer boundaries and generate dialogues. In the community environment, a shift in the perception of refugee women was observed, who were now seen not only as recipients of aid but as active contributors.

To conclude, the inclusion of refugee women in local cooperation and trade networks generated a greater sense of belonging and social integration.
